A car embedded in the bushes of Whangarei's five-finger roundabout proved a head turner for people on their way to work yesterday, though the driver who caused the crash is keeping quiet.
The Holden Commodore had side-swiped a pole underneath the Walton St railway bridge about 12.30am yesterday, according to
reports from the public, said Sergeant Tai Patrick.
"The car was speeding, it lost control, crashed and the people have decamped," he said.
Four young men ran off towards Tarewa Rd, though little description of them was given by the informant. Mr Patrick said the car had not yet been reported as stolen and police would have trouble identifying the driver with certainty as the men had run off.
Yesterday about 3pm a group was seen removing police tape from the vehicle and trying to get inside, before once again running off. Mr Patrick said the car was to be towed as it was "an eyesore", though it was not clear late yesterday who would be covering the costs of the tow.
