Crafts and Arts Northland has a real treat for you and gifts galore for those special people in your life.

Due to popular demand, over 40 members will hold the first Christmas exhibition and sale of their fabulous local work at the Old Library in Rust Ave from 9am to 4pm on December 14, 15 and 16. Gold coin entry.

There will be lots of great items created by local artists and crafters from Whangarei. Pick up something lovely for yourself, or for those last-minute Christmas gifts. Choose from toys, knitting, ceramics, bags, baby wear, cards, candles, garden ornaments, woodwork, as well as artwork, large and small, in all mediums.

The not-for-profit club has been running since 1974 and holds monthly meetings where members socialise and encourage and inspire each other in art and craft work. Speakers, demonstrations and helpful critiques are also part of the meetings held the first Monday afternoon of each month. New members are always welcome.

For more information contact, Gwen on (09) 437 2771, or Kaye on (09) 438 6668.

Extra matinee

Due to demand, the Octagon Theatre's Happy Daze Revue is putting on an extra matinee on December 2 for those unable to get seats for the two previous fully booked matinees. Director Bill Finn says: "Many thanks to the cast and crew for their extra time - we don't want anyone to miss out." Book your tickets at Whangarei Suit Hire, Rust Ave for the meal at 1pm and/or show at 2pm.

Stitches in timeThe Whangarei Embroiderers Guild will mark 30 years of existence on February 16 with a birthday buffet lunch at A'Fare Function Centre and is inviting past members to contact them with a view to joining in the celebrations.

The Guild meets four times a month in the training room at North Haven Hospice between February and November. Teaching is featured on the first Wednesday of the month, a general meeting is held on the second Tuesday (with a display of recently finished work), an evening meeting on the third Tuesday, and a meeting on the fourth Tuesday, which can feature a speaker or a presentation related to embroidery.

New members are welcome - beginners or advanced stitchers, male or female - the guild encourages anyone with an interest in embroidery to visit and see what a friendly and supportive group they are.

For more information about the celebration/lunch or the guild, contact the president, Trish Hughes, on (09) 437 1212; or treasurer Jean Baxter on (09) 432 0210.

Art for charity

On the Edge Gallery & Design is pleased to be curating and sponsoring (along with Harcourts, Whangarei) a charity art auction with all proceeds going to Hospice, Whangarei. A total of 23 art works donated by artists will be available for viewing at the gallery until December 11, with the auction to be held on the evening of December 13 at A'Fare, at the Town Basin.

The "On the Edge" charity art auction - doors open 5.30pm, bidding starts 6pm.

Watch your door After recently fielding several inquiries about free gifts being offered in exchange for goods to be trialled in people's homes, Whangarei Citizens Advice Bureau is warning householders to brush up on their rights concerning door-to-door sales.

While the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act apply to door-to-door sales, there are also the Door-to-Door Sales Act (which only applies if the seller approaches you) and other consumer rights associated with this form of selling.

CAB says that the most useful is the "seven-day cooling-off period". Once the seller has left, you have a chance to rethink your purchase - starting from the day after you sign. Under certain circumstances, the consumer also has a month in which to cancel.

For free information about this topic and many others, contact your nearest open CAB office toll free on 0800 FOR CAB, or pop into the Whangarei branch in the Municipal Building, 71 Bank St.

Big band jazz

The Northern Jazz Society organises monthly live jazz sessions for members and guests and will be presenting the Basin City Big Band during next month's gathering on December 2. The band has been together for a number of years and plays a mix of older big band numbers as well as more modern pieces.

Featured singer for the day is Barbie Davidson.

Society spokesman Maurice Lloyd says: "This is the first time we've been able to have the big band in a number of years. At our new RSA venue, we finally have the room for a larger group like this."

So pop along to the RSA in Rust Ave from 2-5pm. Admission by Gold coin. For more information contact Maurice on (09) 438 3440.
