The country will come together on Saturday to commemorate Anzac Day.

While the day recognises the 2779 New Zealand soldiers and more than 8700 Australian troops who died at Gallipoli, commemorations serve as a wider remembrance for all those who have served their country in times of war.

On Anzac Day, most shops are shut until 1pm, which means if you plan on stopping at the supermarket after the Dawn Service you may need other plans.

The Whangārei Returned and Services’ Association has announced its decision to cancel the district’s largest dawn service, held at Laurie Hall Park, because of safety concerns amid bad weather.

An orange heavy rain warning has been issued for Northland, south of Kawakawa, until 9am tomorrow.

“This decision follows advice received from the Whangarei District Council, MetService, and Civil Defence regarding the uncertainty of the weather,” the Whangārei RSA said.

The 10am service at Maunu Cemetery is expected to take place but remains weather dependent.
