Christmas cheer spread far and wide with 2024 Great Whangārei Santa Run

It was thumbs-up for the Great Whangārei Santa Run, held on the picturesque Hatea Loop Walk.

Santa look-alikes, Santa’s helpers, elves and would-be reindeer were all part of the fun at this year’s Great Whangārei Santa Run on Sunday.

About 250 people took part in the free and festive fun run, which was officially opened by mayor Vince Cocurullo in a Christmas-themed waistcoat.

Holiday cheer was spread far and wide as participants made their way around the Hatea Loop Walk, followed by a joyful prizegiving at the Canopy Bridge.

The event was organised by Cheers Wedding and Events for the second year in a row, with the aim of spreading fun and joy.

Organiser Kylie Springford said it was great to see a lot of families take part this year.

Prizes were awarded for the first Santa across the line, best-dressed Santa, best-dressed pet, best kids’ Santa, as well the best Grinch.

Springford is already starting to plan next year’s event, which could include different start times for runners and walkers.

Participants were well hydrated and fed along the journey with sponsors running refresh stations.

Around 250 people took part in the event, all dressed up in festive Christmas costumes.

The main goal of the Great Whangārei Santa Run was to have fun and spread festive cheer.

Some people ran the 4km loop track but others were happy to simply walk.

Cloud and 20C temperatures meant participants didn’t get too hot as they ran, walked or were pushed around the track.
