Police are looking for a cheeky car thief who took a noise control officer's car and crashed into a parked police car in the rush to get away.

Mid North Senior Sergeant Brian Swann said noise control and police were called to Broadway, Kaikohe's main street, after a series of noise complaints in the early hours of Sunday morning.

However, while the noise control officer, a security firm employee contracted to the Far North District Council, was seizing the offending stereo about 3.20am, someone took off with his car.

But in his hasteto get away the driver hit a police car parked nearby, ripping off a wing mirror and scraping the side panels.

Mr Swann said the stolen car was recovered after it was abandoned a short distance away.

Police were hoping to identify the driver from CCTV footage.

"If we identify someone they'll have a little repair bill to pay."
