Charles St in Kamo developed a unique character through "pepper-potting", a Department of Maori Affairs housing policy introduced more than half a century ago to scatter Maori families among Pakeha neighbours.
Over the years Charles - or "Charlie" - street gained a reputation as a tough neighbourhood, but one alsoknown for residents' aroha and close friendships.
In 1999 the residents hosted a reunion to celebrate community spirit and the importance of whanau.
And up to 350 people are expected to attend a second reunion being held this weekend, beginning with a powhiri in the street today followed by a kids' disco in the Kamo Memorial Hall and darts and pool at the Kamo Hotel this evening.
Fierce competition between residents with odd and even street numbers vying for the Charlie Street Trophy will continue tomorrow with sports challenges at Kamo High School including netball, touch rugby and long ball for adults while children will be involved in novelty races, t-ball, ripper rugby, swimming and bouncy castles.
