A Kaikohe man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of 58-year-old Christopher Vujcich after an incident in Kaikohe over the weekend.
The 21-year-old was initially charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm when he appeared in the Whangarei District Court on Saturday.
The officer incharge of the inquiry, Detective Senior Sergeant Rhys Johnston, said the charge was upgraded to manslaughter following a post-mortem examination in Auckland on Sunday.
The 21-year-old, who was remanded in custody, was due in the Kaikohe District Court on the upgraded charge January 30.
Police would not comment further while the case was before the courts, Mr Johnston said.
