Whangārei royal superfan Bev Long hosted a high tea at her Onerahi home on Saturday to celebrate the royal wedding.

She invited a select group of 12 guests to the celebration in anticipation of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday night.

"We had a great time. The whole 12 turned up in their fancy hats."

Long has hosted high teas in the past to celebrate previous royal visits and weddings, and has a 3000-piece collection of royal memorabilia displayed in her house.

"It all went well and the cake was nice."

Long acquired some new memorabilia for Meghan and Harry's wedding - and to display at the high tea - including cardboard cutouts of the pair and commemorative mugs.

Long, of course, stayed up to watch the wedding and said she was pleased with the slightly unconventional nature of the ceremony.

"It was for both sides of the family."

The wedding included unusual features such as choir performances of modern songs, and a formal address by the head of the Episcopalian church.

She was surprised at Markle's choice of a very simple dress, although she thought it was "lovely".

"I thought it would've been more elaborate, and have a few more sparkles, but you never know. It's their choice."

The Givenchy dress included a five-metre veil featuring tributes to the 53 Commonwealth nations, including a kōwhai flower to represent New Zealand.

The new Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly planning a visit to New Zealand later this year.

The Daily Mail has reported that a trip to Australia, Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand would take place in October, around the time of the Invictus Games in Sydney.

Long said she would love to see them if they happened to come to Northland, but did not think they would.

"It depends on how close they are. They'll probably only come to Auckland," she said.
