The driver and sole occupant of a vehicle that drifted to the left and crashed into a bank on Awaroa Rd, Pukepoto, emerged unscathed but her car was tentatively assessed as a write-off.
A police spokesman said the woman had been on her way home after working a night shiftin Kaitaia and was believed to have fallen asleep, just before 7am yesterday. Speed and alcohol were not believed to have been factors, he said, adding that if it had not been for the vehicle's air bags the outcome could have been "much messier".
Meanwhile, two vehicles collided on the intersection of Broadway and Mangakahia Rd in Kaikohe on Saturday, to the surprise of no one.
The intersection has long been the subject of complaints by truck drivers especially, regarding congestion as vehicles exit from the nearby service station and turn from Mangakahia Rd on to Broadway. Calls for the Far North District Council and/or the NZTA to install a roundabout have never succeeded.
Saturday's crash involved a vehicle exiting the service station and another turning into Mangakahia Rd. Neither driver was hurt.
