A hat-trick from Maungakaramea bowler Callum Thompson was among the highlights of Whangārei cricket at the weekend:Here are the results:
Premier
Whangārei Boys' High School struggled to cope with a strong Kaipara Flats attack and were bundled out for 117 in the 37th over in their match at KensingtonPark on Saturday.
Only Luke Trigg (21) and Kian Bird (22) showed any resistance to the Kaipara bowlers.
Wickets were shared around with Josh Cunis (3-11), Simar Virk (1-17) and Mike O'Flaherty (1-10) being the pick of the bowlers.
The forecast rain then set in and after a lengthy delay, City were set a revised score of 123 in 26 overs.
Callum Garden led the City charge and scored a much-needed 55 off 47 balls and the winning runs were scored in the last over of the match.
Shane Burton (3-21) and Nathan Parkes (1-14) were the stand out bowlers for Kamo but their efforts were in vain, as the City side took the four points.
Maungakaramea hosted Onerahi Central in the final match of the round and this was, again, a very close contest.
Onerahi won the toss and asked Maungakaramea to field. Todd Beehre played well and scored a classy 97 before he was dismissed by Callum Thompson.
Beehre was well supported by Cullen Lowe, who scored 37, and the pair added 82 for the fifth wicket before Mikey Harris ran Lowe out, with some sharp fielding at point.
Onerahi were still in a strong position and just as they were about to really unleash on the Maungakaramea bowlers, Thompson took key wickets and took the wind out of their sails.
His 5-38, including a hat-trick, was the stand out performance for Maungakaramea and he was well backed up by Ian Wallace, who took 3-18 off 8 overs.
Chasing 188 to win, Maungakaramea then watched the rain fall and they were set a revised target of 126, in 26 overs.
Sean Doel bowled extremely well and put the Maungakaramea batsmen under pressure.
His 3-20, including the prized scalps of Ian Page, Chris Page and Neal Parlane gave Onerahi the upper hand and when Tom Lovegrove was dismissed by Tom Herman, by a fantastic catch at point by but Alec Scott, they were in control.
However, the evergreen Bert Horner played a smart innings and he, along with Mikey Harris, added 46 for the seventh wicket and the pair saw Maungakaramea home with eight balls to spare.
