Town Hall is 100 years old

Whangarei's old Town Hall, also known as the Old Municipal Building, will celebrate its 100th birthday today with a small civic ceremony hosted by Mayor Morris Cutforth.

Mr Cutforth will mark the occasion of the first stone being laid at the Bank St Building from 2pm today.

Over the past few months Whangarei District Council staff have been gathering bits and pieces about the building from local residents and these will be displayed proudly at the Old Municipal Building for the public to view this week and will be captured in a "Memories" book.

Councillors and former and current council staff will attend the ceremony today as well as representatives of the organisations that have been located in the building over the years.

Ila Johnson, one of Whangarei's oldest residents at 101, will also attend.
