Appeal after shots fired

Detectives returned to an Onerahi home yesterday after two shots fired through a wooden fence hit a neighbouring home on Wednesday. Police were called to Ross Rd about 4.20pm. No one was injured in a melee in which two shots were fired. Detective Sergeant John Miller said two people were outstanding and they wanted to hear from anyone who may know where they were. If you can help police please call 0800 Crimestoppers or 0800 555 111.

Fire blamed on light

A faulty light fitting is thought to have been behind a fire at Okaihau College in the Far North yesterday. The Okaihau Fire Brigade was called to the school about 10.15am after reports the assembly hall was on fire. Firefighters found a fluorescent light fitting ablaze. Damage was limited to a small section of ceiling. An electrician has been called in to inspect the remaining fittings. A fluorescent light fitting was blamed for the fire that destroyed the Kaikohe ABC early childhood centre in July.

A 30-year-old man who Whangarei police say kicked a hole in a wall following a fight with his mother, has been charged. Whangarei police Sergeant Jonelle Culling said the man didn't like his mother's advice when she cautioned him about drinking too much. The lounge room door took the brunt of his anger and he allegedly threatened his mum. The fact he had been living at his mother's home in Kensington was also allegedly in breach of his bail conditions. He was charged with wilful damage, breach of bail and threatening behaviour.

Young scientists' fair

Three young Far North scientists have been nominated for the prestigious week-long national science fair, Realise the Dream. They are Leah Warren (Kerikeri High School), Timothy Richardson (Springbank School) and Amber Kirk (Kerikeri High). The nominations were announced during prizegiving for the Far North Science and Technology Fair in Kerikeri last week. Nationwide, 50 students are nominated but the Royal Society will choose just 19. Last year, three students from the Far North were nominated, all from Kerikeri High, and all three were selected.
