Waipu lifeguards tackle gruelling obstacle course A team of six Waipu Cove Surf Life Saving Club members took on a gruelling obstacle course to raise money towards saving lives.
The six lifeguards - Tim Manning, Jaine Curran, Sam Ellis, Megan Vercoe, Bailey Hudson and Jack Boakes - took part in the2018 Rescue Run held in Woodhill, Auckland. They were timed across a 15km high intensity obstacle course (which ended up being about 19km) with points awarded for a variety of team challenges.

Obstacle disaster zones were designed by disaster relief and emergency services including Civil Defence, Land Search & Rescue Auckland, St Johns, Surf Life Saving Northern Region, Coastguard Northern Region, Northwest Fire & Emergency and NZ Red Cross.
Each obstacle simulated a real-world rescue scenario, including a cyclone with high winds and flooding, a massive mudslide, a firestorm, dragging patients up sand dunes and a 60-metre long earthquake zone with a car pile-up.
They had to do 15 challenges along the way including answering questions, removing a potential spinal cord injured patient from a car wreck and dragging fire hoses.
Waipu club captain Kath Manning said it was physically and mentally very challenging.
"But our lifeguards rose to the task, and conquered the course working as a team, all while carrying a stretcher the whole way around," she said.
"They all loved the experience and are buzzing about the chance to put their skills into practice again next year."
The rescue run was all about fundraising, and with help from Waipu Lions the club raised more than $3500 towards saving lives. Waipu Surf Life Saving Club's Everyday Hero page is still open for donations.
Te Tuinga night at Bream Bay College Bream Bay College's Pasifika group is just one of the attractions at next week's Te Tuinga night at the college, starting at 6pm in the auditorium on September 25.

The group performed for the school during this week's Pasifika Day at the college, to fundraise for their costumes. Te Tuinga showcases performances from a variety of areas including dance, music, kapa haka and short film.
Tide's Out fun run coming up It's coming up to fun run season, and for a beautiful setting it's hard to beat the setting of Bream Bay College's annual fun run and walk.

The Tide's Out fun run sets off along Ruakākā Beach at low tide on the morning of November 4. With 5km and 10km options for walkers and runners there is something for everyone.
Register online on the Bream Bay College website. Early bird entries before October 29 go in the draw for a pair of running shoes from Smith's Sports Shoes, and there will be loads of spot prizes handed out at prizegiving on the day.
Social volleyball at Waipu Cove If you enjoy volleyball or would like to give it a go, head along to Waipu Cove's Social Beach Volleyball competition this Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
Bring friends and family to Waipu Cove for a day of fun in the sun playing social beach volleyball. Northland's men's and women's volleyball teams are hosting the day, and all ages and skill levels are welcome. Sign up your school or work mates, families and friends and enter either the four-aside or two-aside competition.

Reducing waste in Waipu There's a waste reduction and sustainability evening at the Celtic Barn on October 5, 5.15-7.30pm. The evening is a bid to make Waipu Northland's first single-use plastic free town.
It is part of a community project focused on reducing all forms of waste, supported by the Waipu Business Association, and will connect residents and retailers with environmental specialists.
Entry to "Love U Waipu" is free, so head along and listen to three expert speakers presenting on various sustainability topics followed by a question and answer session. A drink and nibbles will be provided, along with spot prizes for attendees.
