Kaikohe's Daniella Smith, left, and her daughter Talia have created history by being the first mother and daughter combination to fight on the same fight card. Daniella is pictured here during her loss to Arlene Blencowe six months ago.

Six months ago, Kaikohe boxer Daniella Smith looked a beaten mess after having lost her world title bout. Now, she's broken another New Zealand record - and quite possibly a world record.

The 41-year-old, who said after losing to Australia's Arlene Blencowe on the Joseph Parker versus Francois Botha undercard that she was questioning her heart inside the ring, has made history by becoming part of the first mother and daughter combination to fight on the same card.

Daniella and her daughter Talia Waaka Smith both won their respective fights at an Auckland Boxing Association event a week ago.

The feat is the first of its kind in New Zealand and, according to boxing experts and boxing historian Dave Cameron, the first in the world.

On the night, Daniella won her fight with a technical knockout in round five while Talia won by way of a unanimous points decision.

Daniella is no stranger to breaking records, though, after having become the first, and only, New Zealand female to win the IBF boxing world title, in 2010 in Germany.

Her impressive array of titles in the amateur and professional arena served as a source of inspiration for her daughter who, at 18, has made a great start in the sport with a 2-0 record.

Daniella never wanted her daughter to box. However, last year she agreed to coach her after witnessing how natural she was in the ring. It's no wonder considering the boxing gym was Talia's second home from the age of three.

While experience was the inspiration for the up and comer, Daniella was equally motivated by her daughter's dedication and display in the ring on the night.

"[I was] honoured to walk Talia into the ring, and have her return the honour when she walked me in for my fight," Daniella said.

While an honour, the standard was set after Talia dominated her opponent so convincingly. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Daniella stepped up.

Shortly after dropping her opponent in the third round, the referee had to intervene, stopping the fight with Daniella winning by TKO.

When asked what was next for both women they said they haven't ruled out a repeat of the historical event.

Daniella co-owns Boxing Alley in Parnell where Talia works as an instructor and trainer.
