Darkness almost defeated the finals of the Champion of Champion Fours held last Sunday at the Kensington greens.

Thanks to torchlight the last two ends of the women's final were completed and Kamo defeated Waipu in an exciting and see-sawing match.

The game belonged to Waipu when Kamo dropped a six to give them the lead 14-6 and then the fightback started.

Unfortunately for Waipu they dropped a five on the second-to-last end when skip Sharon tipped the jack sideways instead of picking it up clean.

This put Kamo in the lead for the first time and, with them scoring one more point on the final end, gave them the win.

The winning combination was Diana Catton, Madeline Yovich, Dawn Leader and Sara Wright. Runners up were Sharon Rudman, Jo Walker, Jan McGuiness and Verna Clyde, with the final score being 17-14 to Kamo.

Kamo beat Kensington and Waipu beat Onerahi to reach the final.

In the men's final the start of the match was a close affair with Maungaturoto and Maungatapere winning through to meet in the final.

After 10 ends the score was 10-8 to Maungaturoto, but a three on the next end gave them the break they needed.

A four on the 13th end gave them an even bigger advantage and they won the event 15-8.

This was the third Centre title for the season for two players of the combination and gave Kevin Robinson his gold star.

The winning combination was Maungaturoto - Kevin Robinson, Wayne Wrack, Carlson Barnett, Ted Mooney and the runner-up team Maungatapere - Innes McMillan, Jim Taylor, Peter Bates, Bruce Clarkson.

On the Saturday the Champion of Champion Pairs were completed, but due to the weather these matches were transferred to artificial greens.

At Kamo the successful combination was the Onerahi team of Ian Bowick and Bruce Horscroft who defeated Mark Jones and Patrick Lewis of Arapohue in the final.

This win gave Ian Bowick his gold star for achieving five centre titles.

At Onerahi the women had to deal with strong winds and passing, heavy rain showers that resulted in very difficult playing conditions.

The Onerahi combination met the strong Kensington lineup in the final.

This match started off as a comfortable lead for Kensington but the further the match advanced the closer the score got, going into the final end 15-all.

Kensington scored the necessary point to win the event on the last end and this resulted in a 10th centre title for Maree Attwood and a bar to her gold star. Her successful partner was Karen Horscroft.

Runner up went to Ann Halls and Sharron McKinnon.

These events ended the season's activities and the final event will be the annual prizegiving dinner and awards night on June 20 at the Kamo Club. Tickets at the Centre office.
