A round up of the latest action from the Northland bowls scene.

A round up of the latest action from the Northland bowls scene.

Northland Centre hosted the Regional 1-5 Year Sixes competition last weekend featuring teams from Far North (Opononi Club), Northland (Kensington); North Harbour (Mairangi Bay); Auckland (Balmoral) and Counties-Manukau (Manurewa).

Mairangi Bay Club won the tournament with a massive score of 27 win points, +81 shot differential, with one round still to play. Second were Manurewa with 15 points, with Balmoral third, Kensington fourth and Opononi fifth.

This event was played as a singles, pairs and triples competition and each club was the winner of the initial competition held in their Centre.

As none of these players had more than five years of bowling experience, the bowls were of a very high standard and the good crowd watching enjoyed a great competition.

On Sunday the final of the Women's Champion of Champion Triples was played at Mangawhai.

This match was between Waipū, represented by Sharon Rudman, Jill Stewart, and Dawn Owens and Kensington represented by Karen Horscroft, Pam Brewster and Jude Ganley.

After three ends the score was 3-all then Waipū scored 10 shots on the next five ends to get out to a seven shot lead.

This was gradually pegged back by Kensington, who scored five shots on the next three ends.

Both teams then scored a three each and on the 14th end Waipū led 16-11.

Kensington scored on the next two ends but could not peg back the five shot advantage and Waipū ran out the winners 16-14.

This was a first Centre title for each of the Waipū players and after missing out on winning the event in the past, it was nice to see them finally come away with a Centre title.

The Men's Champion of Champion Triples final between Kensington and Whangārei Clubs will be played at the Kamo on Saturday starting at 9am.
