The bins causing a mess in Paramount Plaza have been removed.

The bins causing a mess in Paramount Plaza have been removed.

Secondhand clothing company Savemart has confirmed it took away the deposit bins that triggered a rubbish dumping frenzy at the Paramount Plaza shopping centre in Tikipunga.

Manager of the national chain's Kamo branch, Grace Young said the bins were removed on Monday because they were causing ongoing problems for Savemart, the shopping centre and nearby residents.

That action had quickly followed the Northern Advocate's enquiries about the problem on Monday, with neighbours saying illegal dumping was a daily occurrence at the bins.

Neighbours and retailers had complained about the bins becoming an unsightly, unofficial recycling site, with unwanted goods dumped there on most nights and then people poring over it for items to take away.

Ms Young said Savemart's truck driver had to clear away the mess almost daily and the company was spending a lot of money on taking it to the council's ReSort refuse station.
