Big haul for Northland athletes at World Masters Games

Northland athletes and triathletes brought home a mammoth haul from the World Masters Games.

Between 19 of them, they managed 49 total medals - 22 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze.

A quartet of women were the big winners as they accounted for 19 of them.

Ugen Iyer competed in the 0-34 category, claiming gold in the 200m and the relay and adding silver in the 100m and long jump.

Cian van der Veeken, racing in the 85-89 division, took out gold in five separate events: half-marathon, long jump, triple jump, hammer throw and the 4km cross country.

She also secured silver in the 100m.

Competing out of the 65-69 grade, Nancy Bowmar claimed two golds, a silver and a bronze medal.

She dominated the competition in both the triple and long jump, before finishing second in the high jump and third in the 100m.

Corrine Smith went in a different direction than the others, focusing on middle-distance events in the 50-54 grade.

It paid off as she won three separate race walk events: the 1500m, 3000m and 5000m.

She also picked up bronzes in the 1500m and 5000m.

Six others received gold medals at the largest event ever hosted by New Zealand.

Ady McKenzie took out long-distance events in the women's 40-44 category, clinching victory in the 10km road race and 8km cross country.

Ruth Hutchison brought home the sprint individual triathlon title in the women's 45-49 division.

Ian Calder (men's 55-59) won the 800m gold, while Raymond Eastmond was the top of the bunch in the 400m and 800m in the men's 75-79 grade.

Judith Stewart was another to score multiple golds, winning the 5000m and 10km road race in the women's 65-69 age bracket.

The group that ventured to Auckland also included three officials: Sheelagh Prosser, Jenny Ferris and Sandra Kashammer.

Lucy Andrews (W45-49) - silver in 800m, bronze in 1500m
Carolyn Younger (W45-49) - gold in half-marathon, silver in standard individual triathlon
Corrine Smith (W50-54) - gold in 1500m, 3000m and 5000m race walk, bronze in 1500m and 5000m
Mark Lett (M50-54) - bronze in pole vault
Ian Calder (M55-59) - gold in 800m, bronze in 1500m
Steven Fairley (M60-64) - bronze in 10km road race
Chris Seeley (M60-64) - silver in standard individual triathlon
Judith Stewart (W65-69) - gold in 5000m and 10km road race
Nancy Bowmar (W65-69) - gold in triple jump and long jump, silver in high jump, bronze in 100m
Judith Bradshaw (W65-69) - silver in half-marathon and 8km cross country
Margaret Cooke (W70-74) - silver in long jump and heptathlon, bronze in 100m
Colin McCloud (M70-74) - bronze in 400m and 800m
Raymond Eastmond (M75-79) - gold in 400m and 800m, silver in 1500m
Cian van der Veeken (W85-89) - gold in half-marathon, long jump, triple jump, hammer throw and 4km cross country, silver in 100m
