Art trail preview

Art buffs can get a sneak preview of the upcoming Kerikeri Open Art Studios Trail (Koast) in an exhibition at Kings Creative in Kawakawa.

Koast on View opened in Kawakawa's former picture theatre on Friday and runs until October 25.

The trail itself will be held over the three days of Labour Weekend and will feature paintings, ceramic art, fibre art, jewellery, photography, sculpture, glass and even kaleidoscopes.

Just under 50 artists will take part at 30 locations. It's a rare chance to not just check out the state of the arts in Kerikeri but also to meet the artists in their own studios.

Koast is based on the highly successful Whangarei Heads art trail and first held last year. Go to www.koast.org.nz for more information.

The preview at Kings Creative is open 10.30am-4.30pm daily except Monday and Tuesday. Trail guides are available from Kings or the Koast website.

Two varied and ancient families of flowering plants will be centre stage this weekend when the Bay of Islands Orchid Society and the Far North Bromeliad Group hold their annual combined show.

The doors at the Turner Centre Plaza will be open 9.30am-4.30pm this Friday and 9.30am-3.30pm on Saturday. Entry costs $4 or free to accompanied children under 12.

Garden safari nears

Tickets are now on sale for the Kerikeri Garden Safari on the weekend of October 31-November 1.

The safari is Kerikeri Rotary Club's biggest fundraiser and this year takes in 17 gardens ranging from small urban plantings to sprawling coastal estates. All are within 15 minutes' drive of the town centre.

Tickets are $25 from gardensafari.co.nz, Kerikeri New World, Shoestyles in Kerikeri or Paihia, Kwan's Garden Creations and Unichem Kerikeri Pharmacy. Money raised will go to local and international community and youth development projects.

Hospice auction preview

Hospice Mid-Northland's annual art auction is still a week away but you can get a preview of the treasures up for grabs - and place a silent bid - by popping in to what used to be Poppies Bookshop in Kerikeri.

About 100 artworks and collectibles have been donated so far for the auction at the Turner Centre on October 16.

German violinist visits

An acclaimed German violinist will perform in a chamber music concert at the Turner Centre this Friday.

Elisabeth Kufferath will be joined by top New Zealand musicians Diedre Irons (piano) and Edith Salzmann (cello) and young Kiwi talent in a Concerto Auckland performance from 7.30pm.

Twilight hockey

Twilight hockey is about to get underway at the flood-lit Top Energy Hockey Turf next to Kaikohe's Lindvart Park.

The six-a-side, quarter-field games are aimed at businesses and newcomers, with a focus on socialising, fun and fitness rather than competition. All equipment is provided.

The weekly sessions will run for six weeks starting on Wednesday, October 28, from 6.15pm. Contact Susan Vesey at bayofislandshockey@gmail.com to register or call Brett Morris on 027 253 1002 or Trish Vesey on 021 501 810 for more information.
