Live powerlines are across State Highway 1 near Whangārei after a vehicle struck a powerpole.

The lines came down about 2.50pm near the visitor information centre.

Police, fire and ambulance staff were at the scene it was unclear yet if anyone had been injured in the crash.

Police and traffic management were putting diversions in place and it could be some time before the power company can clear the road.
