The NZ Transport Agency is holding public meetings today and tomorrow to seek feedback about desired improvements to State Highway 11 between Kawakawa and Puketona. Today's meetings will be held from 10am to noon at Opua wharf (by the shops), 1-3pm on Gillies St in Kawakawa (by the Hundertwasser toilets), and 5-7pm in the St John Hall in Kawakawa. Tomorrow's will take place from 9-11am at the corner of Marsden Rd and Williams Rd in Paihia; noon-2pm at Twin Pines Manor in Haruru Falls; and 4-6pm at the Bay of Islands Community Centre, upstairs at 76 Marsden Rd in Paihia.

Teen arrested

A teenager who allegedly pulled a baseball bat at police during a callout was arrested after a short struggle. The incident happened at a house in Otangarei about 10am last Friday. Senior Sergeant Stephanie Hudson said a 17-year-old man allegedly pulled a baseball bat after he was requested by officers to come out of a house. He allegedly ran back inside when challenged by a taser but was arrested shortly after. He appeared in the Whangarei District Court on Saturday and was released on bail to re-appear on May 6. The teenager is facing charges of assaulting police, resisting arrest and possession of an offensive weapon.

Rockquest returns

Smokefreerockquest kicks off for 2019 in Nelson next Friday and will return to Whangārei for another year in a few weeks. The Northland heat of the competition will be held at Tikipunga High School on Sunday, May 19 and the final will be at Forum North on June 11. The Smokefree Tangata Beats competition, which recognises and reflects the unique cultural identity of Aotearoa and the South Pacific, will also be held at Tikipunga High School on May 19.

Kids' Lit Quiz coming

Kiwi quizmaster Wayne Mills will be at Kerikeri Primary School next week to begin the next round of New Zealand heats for the Kids' Lit Quiz. The literary quiz recently got under way in New Zealand for another year with 14 regional competitions that started in Southland on March 8 and run through to May 21. The Northland regional competition will be held next Tuesday at Kerikeri Primary School from 10am to 1pm. The winning team goes on to compete in the national final held on May 26, and the national champions compete against 10 other countries in the world final in Singapore on July 12.
