A record 50 volunteers turned out to pick up rubbish at Whangārei's Wairohia Park for this month's Love Whangārei Monthly Clean up.

The volunteers collected 720kg of rubbish, including 100kg of recycling, 10 road cones, a steel staircase, a dryer and various car parts in two hours on Saturday.

The majority of the group cleaned at the park, while a smaller group started at Manse St and worked their way back.

Northern Advocate photographer John Stone went along.
