Up-and-coming Kaikohe opera singer Kauwiti Selwyn is performing at the Turner Centre in Kerikeri tomorrow with another Northland singing sensation, Tania Priebs. The pair will sing classic favourites in a lunchtime concert starting at 12.30pm. Entry is by suggested donation of $5.

Community Day

A community day which aims to bring families together to find out more about tertiary education and study options will be held next month. NorthTec's third annual Community Day will host free food and entertainment - including a giant water slide. There will also be staff available to provide information, and there will be interactive stalls ranging from blood pressure testing by the nursing department to professional nail painting by the team from beauty therapy. The event is at the NorthTec campus on Raumanga Valley Rd from 10am to 1pm on November 6.

Garden opens to public

Gardening and history buffs are in for a treat next week when one of the country's most historic properties opens to the public. Visitors will be welcomed to the garden at The Retreat, the Pakaraka home of pioneering missionary Henry Williams and his wife Marianne, from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, November 6. The property is opposite Holy Trinity Church, just west of Pakaraka Junction on State Highway 1. Parking is at the church. Entry $5, children free.

Design a superhero cape

If you have ever wanted to be a superhero with your own custom designed cape now is your chance to make it happen. To mark New Zealand Bookshop Day, Storytime Whangarei is calling for heroes to head into the Porowini Ave shop to create and decorate a superhero cape. All you need to do is bring in an old, adult-sized T-shirt. After the cape making finishes at 2pm there will be superhero training and storytelling. The day runs from 9am to 3pm on Saturday.
