A car that has been involved in a police pursuit in Northland has crashed.

The vehicle had been pursued by police but it is unclear if the pursuit was underway when the car crashed into a bank on SH 1, north of Ruapekapeka Rd shortly before 2pm.

Police said the male driving the car had possible back injuries but he was in police custody.

UPDATE 2.15pm

A Northern Advocate reporter at the scene said police had cordoned off the left-hand lane of the passing lane but the road was open in both directions.

Four police cars were at the incident and a person was seen being carried on a stretcher into an ambulance which remained at the scene.

There were skid marks on the road which lead to a vehicle which was off the road and in a ditch.
