The driver of a car involved in a head-on crash with another vehicle on a busy Whangarei road was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Rewarewa Rd about 2.15pm yesterday after a ute and a car with a semi trailer collided head-on.

Three people were injured but no one was trapped.

Two people were treated for minor injuries at the scene while one was transported to Whangarei Hospital in a serious condition.


The nature of the patient's injuries were not clear at edition time last night.

The police serious crash unit was investigating the cause of the crash.

The ute was impounded by police while the car was towed away.
