A normally quiet residential street was under police control this morning after armed police surrounded a house.

McMillan Av in Kamo was in lock down from about 6.30am.

Northland police communications advisor Sarah Kennett said police went to a house to execute a search warrant.

The specialist Armed Offenders Squad - kitted out in black uniforms and armed with firearms - were there to assist other police staff carrying out the search, Mrs Kennett said.

Police were allowing residents out of the street but were checking some of the vehicles by looking in the boot. No vehicles were allowed into the street.
