Kerikeri-based David Clendon has been chosen as Green Party candidate for Northland following a unanimous vote at a party meeting.
Already a Green list MP, Mr Clendon said he looks forward to campaigning across Northland, where he has strong personal and political connections.
He said he believes the Greens are in a good position to substantially increase the party vote in the electorate where in 2011 the party gained 11.5 per cent of the party vote in Northland, equivalent to their national average.
"This is the year when we can step up to be part of a progressive Government, to affect changes that will improve the lives and wellbeing of all New Zealanders," Mr Clendon said.
It is too early to say whether he will be a shoe-in for the Greens based on his list position and dismissed reports of a fictitious "Green list ranking" document circulating among right-wing blogs.
