With Christmas upon us, here I am again asking you to fit in some time for Project
Promise - we need people to write letters to the NRC as a follow up to the submissions done in May.
There were 101 submissions sent in to the Northland Regional Council Draft Annual Plan 2010-2011 in May this year supporting Project Promise. Some of the submissions requested the NRC strike a regional rate or levy to contribute funds to help build a
new oncology unit.
These were supported by a number of verbal submissions indicating the strength of the feeling of the Northland community.
The response received from the NRC for submissions was that as the Regional Council did not include an initial proposal in the Annual Plan 2010-2011, so in accordance with the requirements of the Local Government Act 2002 they had to do a detailed state
ment of proposal and the wider public be given the opportunity to comment on it.
The NRC will now be preparing for the 2011-2012 Draft Annual Plan and it would help them consider Project Promise in more detail if letters were sent detailing the views
of the wider Northland Community and the social responsibility.
These are some of the things to consider and include in your letter/email:
The NRC received over 100 submissions from the Northland community and their
response was that it would be considered in the 2011-2012 draft plan preparation
Health has had spending slashed by our current government, so the opportunity to have an Oncology Unit funded via Health budgets in Northland is nil
We all have a social responsibility and the people of the Northland Community are showing they care through the fundraising and support they have given in the first 9 months of this project therefore our NCR decision makers need to be seen as leaders and address as their key social issue the need for a new oncology unit in Northland
The NRC made a contribution via rate payers for the Toll Stadium, it worked and we should applaud them for that. It is important that they understand that an Oncology
Unit deserves the same if not more of a priority in terms of providing not only a good service to the community of Northland, but a much needed service, and one that will affect almost all Northlanders in some way
The stark reality shows the cancer rates in Northland as being one of the highest in New Zealand and that is in terms of new cases and deaths. To research and assess this
fully adds another time factor which for me is not the way I want the Northland community to move forward. I want us all to work together and make a new oncology unit happen today and we need the NRC to consider this in their preparation of the
2011-2012 Draft Annual Plan.
The 3 Pleases: Please help today by writing to the NRC by the 12 January 2011.
Please use your own words with the focus on social and community responsibilty.
Please send your thoughts to your friends across all of Northland and ask them to do the same.
