Volunteer firefighters had to run a shuttle service to get water to fight a scrub fire at Awanui.
About 30 firefighters spent three hours battling the blaze yesterday, which started about 2.50pm in a section of scrub near the intersection of State Highways 1 and 10.
Fire Service volunteer support officer Colin Kitchen said the cause of the fire was being investigated - including people who had been smoking out beehives.
There had been no water nearby so six appliances from the Kaitaia, Ahipara, Mangonui and Pukenui rural brigades had to run a shuttle service to bring in water.
The fire was under control by about 5.45pm.
