Armed police have cordoned off part of central Kerikeri this evening after a gunpoint robbery at the Homestead Tavern.
A police spokesman said two people had entered the pub, pointed a rifle at staff and demanded money about 9pm. They had then left on foot with an unknown quantity ofcash.
The bar staff were shaken but physically unharmed.
Armed police were stationed on Kerikeri Rd, between Caltex service station and the John Butler Centre, and on Fairway Drive, between the Northern Advocate office and the roast shop.
They were turning back traffic and keeping pedestrians off Homestead Rd until a police tracking dog arrived about 9.30pm.
Residents who been heading home to Amokura Drive and guests at a motel next to the tavern were forced to wait on the Caltex forecourt just outside the cordon.
Police urge anyone with information about the robbery, or about anyone suddenly in possession of an unusual amount of money, to contact the Kerikeri station on (09) 407 9211 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
