Anzac Day wait for flyover in Waipū
Marchers in Waipū's Anzac Day parade must have legged it a little too quickly down Waipū's main street to the cenotaph last Thursday.
They were scheduled to begin their march at 10.45am, with the service at the war memorial due to begin at11am.
The Northcal pipe band, which led the march, halted at the car park exit, thinking their job was done – but there were still several minutes before the Royal New Zealand Air Force's scheduled Hercules flyover at 11am.
Band members appeared slightly startled to be asked to play a tune or two to fill in time, but after a hurried whispered consultation they rallied, and entertained the crowd with Scottish music until the big plane roared overhead.

Guest speaker Lieutenant Commander Roger Saynor of the Royal New Zealand Navy addressed the crowd at the service and talked about the changing role of the country's defence forces in the 100 years since the first peacetime Anzac Day in 1919, and about their importance in upholding the values New Zealanders hold dear.

Thousands of fairy lights and dozens of Chinese lanterns glittered over Bream Bay College's auditorium, setting the scene for the school's "Night of Lights" ball last Friday night.

The first Northland school ball of the season was held during the holidays, so students did not have to miss school preparing for the event.
One hundred and twenty five year 11-13 students arrived on the evening in an assortment of vehicles, from classic cars to army jeeps.
Award winners for the evening were: Cutest couple – Trey Heiwari and Holly Munford, Best-dressed – Jamie Lymburn and Sarah Burling, Belle and Beau – Georgia Moodie and Kara Petera, Prince and Princess – Latham Aull and Alyssa van Gelder, King and Queen – Kavidu Mapatunage and Zena Finlayson.
Black Grace Perform in Waipū
Dance group Black Grace perform their show 20for20 at Waipū's Celtic Barn this Saturday night, one stop on their 20-centre tour of the country from Kaitaia to Christchurch.
Show starts 7.30pm, $20 tickets at the door available from 6.30pm.
Black Grace, led by Neil Ieremia since 1995, are an internationally renowned company which fuse Pacific and contemporary dance and on Saturday will present a mix of iconic favourites plus new works.
The Villani Piano Quartet will perform at Black Sheep Farm this Sunday from 2pm.

Scottish Barn dance for new croquet clubrooms
Waipū Croquet Club promises a night of Scottish-themed fun with their fundraising Ceilidh on May 18 at the Coronation Hall.
Celtic band Twisty Willow and singers Emma Couper and Sarah Whittle are just three of the artists providing foot-tapping entertainment for the evening.
To help dancers catch their breath between performances, Scottish Highland Dancers and Scottish Country Dancers will entertain the crowd.
Money raised will go towards a new croquet club room. Twisty Willow Celtic Band promise to call the dancing so that it is dead easy for even new comers.
To join in the hooley be at the Coronation Hall on May 18 at 7.30pm.
Tickets are $15 and are available from Jean on 027 688 5985 or on the door. Supper is included in the ticket price and a cash bar is available.
Fundraising golf tournament
Marsden Lions Club's annual Charity Golf Tournament is coming up on May 10 at Waipu Golf Club.
Funds raised will go to the Northland Rescue Helicopter, Ruakākā Surf Life Saving Club, Ruakākā Volunteer Fire Brigade and St John Bream Bay.
Get your team together and support this worthy cause - $75 per player, which includes a meal, course fees and player prizes.
