There's an old saying - if a bird poops on your head, it'll bring you good luck.
And it's an adage that proved true for a Bay of Islands man - he won $100,000 on an Instant Kiwi shortly after a messy encounter with a bird in Russell.
The man, who does
not want to be identified, had the bird "poop" on his head late last week. Now he plans to use his winnings to return to his native Christchurch to help the earthquake recovery efforts.
He said his friends gave him heaps about the mishap but told him it was a sign that good luck was just around the corner.
The man said he didn't believe that having a bird defecate on his head could be anything other than rotten luck.
"I thought it was a load of rubbish, but when I was in a Lotto shop I had $5 left in my wallet so thought I would buy a scratchie and test my luck," the man said.
"I could not believe it when I scratched the right numbers and realised I had won $100,000. I had to get the people behind the counter to double check the ticket to make sure I was not seeing things.
"It is such a great feeling. I plan to start a new life with this win. I want to wipe my debts and just enjoy life."
He bought the ticket from Fullers Bay of Islands, in Russell, on Saturday and scratched it straight away.
And just like he couldn't believe the bird poop good luck adage, he initially couldn't believe he'd won the $100,000 until the two women behind the counter confirmed it.
He plans to move back to Christchurch.
"This win gives me the funds to be able to get down there and be able to help out in anyway I can in the city's rebuild," he said.
A Lotto spokeswoman said the man's tale was one of the more quirky stories she had heard from lucky winners.
She said it was another indication of how Lotto luck could strike anywhere and it happened because the man wanted to test his luck after a supposedly lucky event.
The spokeswoman said the man, and many other New Zealanders, would be hoping some Lotto luck would shine on them this weekend, with Saturday's Powerball jackpot reaching a life-changing $25 million.
If the whopping jackpot was won by a single person, it would be the second-biggest individual Lotto prize ever claimed in the country.
