A steam train from Auckland was welcomed into town on Saturday by about 600 keen spectators at the Old Train Station in Whangarei, in what could be its final journey north.
President of the Classic and Sports Car Club Northland Phil Schultz was thrilled to see the turnout of car
and steam train enthusiasts at the station, where 68 cars were showcased.
"When the train arrived, the platform was full of people pressed shoulder to shoulder," he said.
The steam locomotive arrived about an hour later than expected due to the poor state of Northland rail, Mr Schultz said, adding that about 100 people arrived on the train.
The annual excursion with Mainline Steam will continue but there is a suggestion two-unit diesel railcars will be used instead.
