PURAKAUNUI FALLS is one of New Zealand's beautiful waterfalls, located 10km east of Maclennan. A walkway to the falls starts off Waikoata Valley Rd. The track is a gentle 20-minute stroll, winding through a mix of silver beech and podocarp forest before reaching a lookout. Be sure to descend to
the stream-level viewing platform which provides a far superior view of the three tiers that combine to make these falls so magnificent.
The NUGGET POINT walk is a 30-minute amble to the soaring lighthouse. The track follows the ridge at of Nugget Point delivering panoramic views of the Otago Peninsula and the Catlins coast. The lighthouse, 130 years old, towers over New Zealand's most dynamic marine mammal zone. Nugget Point is home to fur seals, sea lions and elephant seals who happily co-exist. If your kids love wildlife encounters, this walk is a definite pleaser.
FOVEAUX WALKWAY is a highly recommended track for Southland-bound holidaymakers. The 50-minute walkway starts from Stirling Point at the start of State Highway 1 in Bluff. The carpark is the site of the world-famous AA signpost which is a mandatory photo stop. The gently undulating walkway winds its way to Lookout Point. The birdlife is bountiful on the coastline, with black-backed gulls, Stewart Island shags and white-fronted terns commonly observed. The walk to Lookout Point provides you with panoramic views of Foveaux Strait and Stewart Island. It's an invigorating, windswept walk to rival the patriotic stroll to Cape Reinga.
