The recent drop in temperature has got us scrambling around in our wardrobes for sumptuous winter layers guaranteed to keep the cold at bay. The cold snap may have passed, but we can't avoid the fact autumn is finally here. While we've probably got a few more weeks before we
have to start layering on heavy coats, scarves and gloves, now is the time to search out those key trans-seasonal pieces that will see you through autumn and winter.
All legs
Unfortunately for most of us, it's time to start moving the fake tan to the back of the beauty cabinet, as bare legs are the first to feel the cold when the seasons change. As much as we'll all miss the sun's rays, it's not all doom and gloom - the gorgeous hosiery of today is anything but dull. Forget about the boring opaques of high school days and instead think animal prints, metallics and statement colour.
Those blessed with the legs of a catwalk model can get playful with an array of colours and prints, while those with shorter legs should look for vertical prints to lengthen legs instantly.
If you're still not convinced about hosiery, just think about it as a way of extending the life of your wardrobe. You may not be able to get away with wearing all your summer outfits through autumn, but when teamed with the right hosiery, you'll be able to get more wear out of your favourite pieces.
If the jacket fits ...
It's not quite cold enough to start pulling out woollen coats and piling on layers, but it is time to invest in a tailored jacket that will instantly spruce up your look.
Blazers are big again this season and have to be our top pick for trans-seasonal wear. They look chic and sophisticated and give you that little bit of extra warmth as the sun goes into hiding. If you want to be on-trend, the must-have colours this year are deep navy and delicious camel shades.
And don't write off the blazer as just a workwear essential - team with either skinny or boyfriend-style jeans for elegant casualwear. A killer pair of heels will complete the look.
Woollen wondersBeloved merino is back again for another season. Merino essentials come in an array of styles these days, from short-sleeved singlets to form-fitting knit dresses. You can pick up good merino basics for a reasonable price from most chain stores and they'll see you comfortably through autumn and winter.
Dress fine merino knits up for workwear and down for the weekend, and when winter is truly at its worst, make merino one of your first layers.
Chunky knits are also set to make a mark on the fashion scene this winter. Layer with maxi skirts and jeans for boho-chic weekendwear. We're also in love with heavy, oversized cardigans - hang them by the front door and never leave home without them.
