A new season offers the perfect excuse to expand your wardrobe, but we don't need to be so hasty when it comes to relegating the rest of our clothing to the back of the closet until spring arrives. It's undeniable that there are some pieces that have to go into hibernation, but by  mastering the art of layering, you can stylishly extend the life of some of your favourite pieces.

Balancing act

Unless your figure resembles that of a runway model, layering tends to send shivers down the spines of  fashionistas. Throw on everything haphazardly and you'll look messy.

Also, layering can quickly become a disaster zone on both petite and larger figures. Go overboard and you'll quickly swamp dainty frames and make curvier frames look larger than they are.

If you get it right, though, you'll get the most out of your wardrobe, keep warm and snug and be able to express yourself creatively through your clothes.

Back to basics

When it comes to layering, the best place to start is with the basics, while keeping your body shape in mind.

The essential trick when planning your outfit is to keep your first layers refined and lightweight to avoid looking unnecessarily bulky.

In winter, fine-knit merino tunics are the perfect solution. From there you can unleash your creativity and add layers as you please.

If you're looking to get some extra wear out of your summer frocks, an array of cardigans, leggings and cute wedge booties will help see you through the colder months. And don't be afraid to mix trends and colours.

Law of the jungle

As much as we love the current animal print resurgence, wear leopard print from head to toe and you could easily be mistaken for an animal escaped from the zoo.

Layers of military-inspired hues of khaki or camel make the perfect accompaniment to wild prints. Team with a safe pair of leggings and shearling-lined boots and you'll have the look nailed.

Finishing touches

Don't forget layering doesn't stop at your clothes - accessories will complete your look, not to mention keep you warm.

If you're still afraid of becoming the bulky bag lady, a scarf will do just the opposite. Keep your eyes  peeled for scarves in a variety of prints and colours and mix and match them with different outfits to give your look a new edge.

Here at Simply You, we're in love with Dyrberg/Kern's latest jewellery collection, which fuses masculine and feminine touches. We can't wait to adorn our wrists in layers of bold leather cuffs alongside some smaller, dainty pieces.
