This summer modern warfare has never looked so glamorous as in-vogue military is revamped for the warmer months. If you're one who is a little reluctant to invest in trend-driven fashion, we can reassure you military's not about to leave home base yet. The winter 2011 collections at New Zealand Fashion Week saw military-inspired hues get an elegant overhaul. Invest in some pieces now, because utilitarian luxe is well and truly here to stay.
Weekend deployment
Essential weekend-wear pieces are infused with a military feel this summer. Crop jackets are an absolute must-have as they are perfect for cooler summer evenings and ideal for trans-seasonal wear come next autumn. The shirt dress in khaki or beige is a versatile piece perfect for weekends away. Subtle, refined details make all the difference. Button detailing and epaulettes will add a touch of military without making you feel you're heading off on your tour of duty.
Precious cargo
We've seen the cargo pant craze come and go, and now they are back again. We know the thought of them can conjure images of fashion disasters, but in our books, cargo pants have been reinvented for the better.
No matter how much pain you're ready to put yourself through to be the ultimate fashionista (we do commend you for tottering everywhere in skyscraper heels), nothing beats comfort. As the pyjama king, Peter Alexander told us last week, "comfort is the ultimate in luxury". We're not advising you wear your PJs out of the house. However, we tend to agree that nothing beats wearing comfortable clothes, which is why we are in love with the revamped cargo pant.
There are some amazing luxe versions around at the moment, so if you're all set to play dress-up, look for a pair in a fabric with a soft sheen.
Chain of command
Accessories also take on a utilitarian feel. When it comes to jewellery, think about mixing textures. Leather and chains create the perfect partnership. And instead of going for opulent, shiny gold, look for pieces in antiqued, brassy shades.
Satchel handbags, which we think are just great because of their generous size, look particularly chic when worn cross-body style.
Buckled boots may be a little hot for summer, so keep your eyes peeled for summer sandals and heels with similar detailing. Hot shoes in shades of camel, beige and even nude are the ideal colour match for khaki outfits. Dress up cargo pants to the max by slipping on a pair of killer heels. You're all set to turn heads.
