Sydney's harbour and coast is fringed with some fabulously panoramic walkways, which will add a real tonic to your city break.
The Fairfax Walking Track, on top of North Head, is festooned with heritage sites. The National Artillery Museum showcases the defensive measures deployed over the years to safeguard Sydney, while
the Old Quarantine Station is a labyrinth of intriguing buildings that new migrants were temporarily housed in to prevent the spread of disease. Up until 1984, all migrant ships would offload their passengers here. The nightly ghost tours are a popular excursion.
On the south side of the harbour, make a beeline for the Gap. Adjacent to Watsons Bay, the bite in the sheer sandstone cliffs inspired its name. Gap Park is one of the most photographed coastal features in New South Wales - and, sadly, it is also Sydney's most notorious site for suicide attempts.
Further down South Head Rd is the most popular of all coastal walks - Bondi to Coogee. The 5km route starts at Bondi's flesh-packed sands, adjacent to Icebergs Club. The cliff-hugging path weaves its way past the pretty beaches of Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly Beach, before descending on to the golden sands of Coogee. Keep an eye on the ocean - you may well see migrating whales or playful dolphins.
If uphill walking isn't your idea of holiday fun, reverse the walking route and set out from Coogee to Bondi, which is far easier on the calf muscles.
