Venturing underground to visit the Te Anau glowworm caves is an unforgettable experience. This is a family-friendly journey with a splash of theatre. A recent population explosion of baby glowworms has amped up the symphony of lights.
Your journey starts on the Luminosa, a modern boat owned by Real Journeys, where
you can sit back, relax and enjoy the beauty of Lake Te Anau. In 30 minutes you reach the lake's western shores - home to a network of limestone caves. Here friendly guides safely navigate you up the path and into the cave system. Traverse the limbo-bar-like entry (some bending required) and you've made it.
The cave is 12,000 years old, and is still being shaped by the rushing river system. It's carved out the rock, creating whirlpools and waterfalls. Once you board your boat it's off to the glowworm grotto. It gets darker and darker as you journey deeper into the cave.
It's imperative to be quiet as these critters are very sensitive. Nature's light-show is wondrous - the walls and roof are a miniature metropolis of lights. Upon your return, be sure to watch the video show.
