On the strength of its title track alone, Wolfmother's fourth album is something to get excited about.

Victorious is the follow-up to 2014's New Crown, and continues the Australian band's love affair with classic rock.

Like Royal Blood two years ago, Wolfmother bring a new vitality and enthusiasm to the genre.

Their sound takes the energy and atmosphere of the music of days gone by and marries it with frontman Andrew Stockdale's modern innovation and ideas. Stoner rock meets the 21st century.

The hard rock is also tempered at times by a real pop sensibility, particularly on the jangly Best of a Bad Situation, while Pretty Peggy, on which Stockdale channels Supergrass, has the makings of a festival favourite.

As does the song Victorious, a monster of a track bringing together Stockdale's distinctive vocals, swirling organ, driving guitars and thundering drums.

There are some flatter moments on the album, and we could do without lyrics like "Roses are red, violets are blue" but when it comes to attitude, rock & roll needs Wolfmother like you and I need oxygen.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars.
