The Other Guys
(M), 107 minutes, 3.5/5
The competition is pretty fierce when it comes to who is leader of the pack for male comedy actors.
Throw in names like Steve Carell, Adam Sandler, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell and the new-generation names such as Michael Cera, Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill
and you have a batch of top-notch performers.
But are any of them better than Will Ferrell? He is a master of this form of entertainment and previous efforts like Semi-Pro, Blades of Glory and Step Brothers show how talented he is and how readily he brings a smile to your face.
The Other Guys provides Ferrell with a great vehicle to show his huge range of talents.
Almost single-handedly he carries this movie along, making it incredibly watchable and entertaining.
And although the script provides him with some wonderful lines, it is the character he creates that brings constant amusement.
What sets this movie apart from the many other light-hearted comedies is that it is funny throughout.
All too often we get to see all the funny bits in the trailers and are left wanting more as we sit through the entire film.
But not here - the laughs keep coming with Ferrell at the centre of most of them.
Ferrell plays Allen Gamble, a New York City cop much more at home behind a computer than out on the streets arresting bad guys.
But his partner - Terry Hoitz (played by Mark Wahlberg) - is itching to get back on the beat and prove himself as one of the "rock stars" of the department.
When the pair stumble on a huge fraud they struggle to convince anyone they know what they are doing.
Ultimately, they have to use their good policing skills and intuition if they are going to stay alive and put the bad guys away.
