Guardians of the Galaxy (M), 135 minutes

Thirty-seven years ago the world was transfixed by the adventures of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo as they battled to save the universe and defeat an evil enemy - Darth Vader.

The Star Wars saga was something special that won over fans the world over.

Now we have Guardians of the Galaxy, which has many parallels with the space pioneer all those years ago.

We have a somewhat reluctant hero, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who lost his parents when he was little and was then kidnapped by intergalactic gangsters.

Forced to make his own way in the world, Peter must live by his wits and make a dollar any way he can.

When he sees an opportunity to make some money on an in-demand orb, Peter finds himself the prime target of a manhunt.

Ronan the Accuser needs that orb to become all-powerful and rule the universe.

Peter's actions draw the attention of security forces and he ends up in a space prison full of the worst lowlifes.

In prison he joins forces with a strange group of creatures who are to become his gang: Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is the daughter of all-powerful Thanos; Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) wants to find and kill Ronan; Rocket (Bradley Cooper) is a crafty rodent and his offsider and muscle is Groot (Vin Diesel), a human form of a tree.

With Peter they form an interesting and multi-talented team.

Their objective is to get the orb back and either make some good money out of it or get it somewhere safe where Ronan can't get to it.

Their adventures are a lot of fun and full of action.

Each of the characters offers different skills, and humour seems to carry them along.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a lot of fun. If you've seen Star Wars you will be aware of similarities with these new-age adventurers.

And be prepared, this won't be the last time we see these guardians saving the universe.
