After a tough year, who could blame you for a bit of indulgence over the silly season. But there's such a thing as overindulgence and the last place you want to be making a fool of yourself is in front of your colleagues.
To make the most of the party, as
well as the next day, plan your work Christmas party like you would your career.
* Don't turn up hungry. Even a do in a restaurant may mean hours before your first meal, so remember to eat before heading out so as to take the edge off your hunger and stop you drinking on an empty stomach.
* Dress the part. You may be on your feet for a while so make sure you've got shoes on that will go the distance but are also smart enough to get you entry into a swanky bar or club if the night continues long after the party. You don't want to be left behind.
* It's who you know. Get social by volunteering for a role at the party as the official photographer. You'll avoid drinking too fast and find yourself talking to everyone - something you may not otherwise get around to doing.
* Pace yourself. Drink a mid-strength beer. A full-strength beer is about 5 per cent alcohol and a light beer less than 2.5 per cent. A mid-strength beer falls bang in the middle at 3.5 per cent.
* Plan your exit strategy. If you need to go to several parties in one night don't rely on being able to drive to each - car-pool or arrange transport. And don't fall out of the hired company bus at the end of the night - watch your step.
