In my book, there is one Queen City attraction that stands head and shoulders above the rest, a blockbuster destination that performs to a fresh script every day, underwritten by the unpredictable quirks and characteristics of its all-star cast.
Yes, Auckland Zoo, unquestionably New Zealand's grandest wildlife sanctuary, is an absolutely
enchanting attraction.
Home to over 110 different species and 700 animals in a diverse array of habitats, Auckland Zoo sports its conservation stripes with huge pride.
The park is deeply involved in a multitude of conservation projects and breeding programmes, spanning native and exotic species.
Urban Ark is dedicated to reducing pest species that harm our native wildlife and plants. The hands-on project will encourage your kids to learn some tips and tricks to help the cause.
The incredible kaleidoscope of wildlife may well take you all day to admire. My must-see favourites would have to be the orangutans, alligators, tortoises, hippos, baboons, red pandas and tigers.
And It would be very rude not to pay a courtesy call on Auckland Zoo's oldest resident, 57-year-old-chimpanzee Janie. This grand old aunt is incredibly engaging - and I quietly suspect she goes out of her way to pose for photos. Her laughs, grunts and chimp giggles are undeniably infectious.
To accentuate your experience, be sure to check out Auckland Zoo's ever-expanding programme of closer animal encounters, such as Safari Nights and the behind-the-scene Zoom tours.
The supplementary charges help power much of the zoo's vital conservation work and world-recognised credentials. www.aucklandzoo.co.nz
WHERE TO STAY
Character hotels are few and far between in Auckland, but a real gem that was originally erected in 1912, the year of the Titanic, continues to offer outstanding, personable hospitality and comfort.
The Auckland City Hotel boasts 138 spacious guestrooms, loaded with mod-cons and eco-friendly products, tasty in-house dining at Bing's Restaurant and pamper time at the Purity Day Spa.
Centrally located in Hobson St, Auckland City Hotel's nightly room rates are exceptionally good value for the whole family. www.aucklandcityhotel.co.nz
