All winter we dream of lying on golden beaches, but when it comes to summer, the stars need to align for it to be as relaxing as we imagine.
Blue skies are a must, the swimsuit definitely has to fit right and we need to feel like we're not going to
be burnt so bad that the next few days are a write-off.
So slip, slop, slap and wrapping is a must.
Before the cliche gets to you though, bear in mind fashion needn't be sacrificed to keep sunburn at bay.
Here's the fashionable version:
SLIP ... into sunsmart (but stylish) clothing
Kaftan alert! Slip into a bright, bold one during the middle of the day to cover shoulders, arms and bikini-bared tummies. They're flattering on everyone and are usually made from cotton or linen to keep you cool.
When choosing other pieces from throwing over togs keep in mind a few simple sunsmart rules.
Firstly, consider the structure of the fabric - the closer the holes, the more UVR will be kept out. Dark colours will also protect you from more UVR than light. Loosely fitting clothing will also protect you more than tight fitting garments.
Look for linen pants to wear with your bikini top, rouched sundresses and add some style-y jandals to keep feet from blistering on hot sand.
SLOP ... on some sunscreen
The higher the SPF level the better. Which makes Neutrogena's SPF 100+ the one to apply if you want to really ensure you won't be peeling in a week's time.
SLAP ... on a hat
Broad-brimmed is better when it comes to protection, but you'll get fashion points plus sunsmart ones with fashionable bucket hats this summer. And for vanity's sake, they stop hair colour from fading.
WRAP ... on a pair of sunglasses
Being sunsmart and being in style go hand in hand this summer with over-sized sunnies still everywhere. They're also the best choice for keeping sunrays from eyes. Look for polarised lenses as they block light-rays that reflect off the road and water. They may sound super-cautious but they are a must with New Zealand's harsh sun.
