It's show time. There'll be plenty of gardens on display over the next few weeks and it's a wonderful time of year to enjoy the fruits of other people's labours.
The Heroic Gardens Festival is a fantastic region-wide exhibition of privately owned gardens and will be held on the weekend of
March 5-6.
This year's event marks the 15th anniversary of the festival, which showcases gardens with a difference. It is primarily a subtropical summer celebration, with strong showings of bromeliads, palms and cycads. Also to be enjoyed are organics, perennial borders, farm, orchard and formal gardens.
In this festival the owners are also the gardeners and they are on-hand to talk to visitors throughout the weekend.
Last year the Heroic Gardens Festival raised $51,500 for the Hospices of Auckland.
