Final show dream for young talent

Exotic sets, one of Northland's best young voices, and a technicolour dreamcoat.

Pompallier Catholic College are putting on Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat for their annual production.

Singing star John Mcdonald is in his last year of high school and the music department wanted to see him shine in his last school production.

"I had a few choices [of shows] but Joseph really stood out and I chose Joseph because we are a Catholic school and it has religious elements," he said.

Director Stephen McAteer said rehearsals have been ramped up in the lead-up to opening night last night. "We've been having practices through lunch-times all year but in the last few weeks we've been rehearsing for hours."

Costumes have been made by three dedicated mothers, who have created dazzling get-ups for the students.

About 80 students from Year 7 to 13 are involved with the production, from actors, singers, musicians, lighting and stage crew.

John is enjoying playing Joseph, he said, and it is his first lead role in a school production. The 17-year-old has achieved well in numerous singing competitions, including a third placing at the New Zealand Aria Competition held in Rotorua last year.
