Traveling lightly makes getting around easier. Photo / Thinkstock

Traveling lightly makes getting around easier. Photo / Thinkstock

I never seem to be able to pack lightly when travelling. Even for a weekend I have something for every possible event then end up not being satisfied. Do you have some kind of a checklist of items for a weekend away that may help me plan for my next one and not make me look like I am off for a month-long European excursion?

I have to confess I'm right up there with the world's worst travel packers. As you say, you're trying to think of every eventuality. I am getting better, though.

For a weekend away, here's what I'd consider based on an autumn/winter season:

*One pair of casual trousers - jeans, ponte pants, leggings, etc, something comfortable for daytime.
*One pair of smart trousers - ponte pants, dress trousers or smart jeans, something for the evening, or a dress - it really depends on what you have planned for the evenings.
*Four to five tops that work well with your trousers. You could have fewer and use your accessories to create different looks: three tops that you can wear during the day; two tops you can wear in the evening.
*Blazer/jacket - something to keep you warm but which will also smarten up your outfit. Or you may feel more comfortable in a cardigan.
*Shoes: one pair of flat shoes to go with your trousers that are comfortable enough to walk around in all day; heels - these could be shoes or boots - to dress up your look and take you into the evening.
*Accessories: necklaces, scarves, bag - these are the special ingredients. Accessories can change a look and dress an outfit up or down. You could wear the same outfit all day and into the evening, simply by changing your jewellery and shoes.
