It can be hard to drag yourself to the gym or out on to the street for a run in winter. Get some cute workout gear to help lift your spirits and keep you on track with your exercise regime. If you look the part, you are more likely to feel it.

When you go shopping for exercise clothes, think about what you actually need for your specific routine. If you do a lot of pilates or yoga, you need  flexible fabrics that will move with your body. Avoid anything that will restrict your range of motion.

If you tend to exercise indoors, you can wear the same gear all year - just pop a jacket on top to protect you on your run from the car to the gym.

But if you are exercising outside in winter, layer your outfit to keep  warm. Start with a thermal layer closest to your skin. Look for fabrics with thin wicking - this draws sweat away from your body, so you do not  end up feeling damp and cold.

Cotton is not a good option for winter exercise gear, as it tends to  absorb  sweat and feel heavy and wet against your skin.

Next, add an insulating layer like a fleece or sweatshirt. Wool is a good fabric for winter warmth as it naturally wicks the sweat away.

Finish with a protective layer like a waterproof jacket. Layering will allow you to remove or add garments depending on how you feel during your warm-up, workout and cool-down periods.

Do you need to be seen by passing motorists? If you run or cycle on the roads in the dark, look for clothes with built-in reflective panels or  fluoro colours.  Most modern running shoes have a reflective component, but if you want to be extra-visible, get some reflective tape to wrap around your arms, or a hi-vis vest.

Think about your accessories - a cap is useful if you are running at night to stop passing vehicles' headlights shining in your eyes, and a good headband is essential to keep your hair out of your face. Look for  socks with  plenty of padding to protect your feet and help you avoid blisters.

It may seem like it's not worth spending much money on workout gear, as you  wear it for only a limited number of hours during the week. But good-quality garments will last a long time and help you get the most out of your regime.
