Lift your mood by adding a pop of neon to your outfit this season.

Lift your mood by adding a pop of neon to your outfit this season.

Walking around the shops lately, you may get the horrible feeling you've been transported back to the 80s.

Alongside all the pastel summer dresses and black shifts for work, there's fluoro. Bold, unabashed, neon, in-your-face fluoro. Red, orange, pink, yellow, even a sort of fluoro blue. It's enough to make you think you've stumbled on to some sort of strange roadworks site.

If you're anything like me, your first thought is probably: Who, apart from the tiniest, chirpiest 13-year-old is actually ever going to wear this?

Believe it or not, it may be worth a second look. As long as you keep the rest of your outfit very minimalistic, a fluoro piece can make an interesting, eye-catching pop of colour. For the weekend, a super-bright camisole worn with white jeans could get you in the summer mood.

There's one thing that's clear: You can't be too shy with this one. Dabble in it this spring and see if a fluoro outfit is the guaranteed mood lifter I've been told it is. If all else fails, get into the trend in the most subtle way - with a pair of bright underpants, like these ones from Bonds.
